I was just wondering what /r/guitar thinks about the skills needed to play the intro of the song, and also, how long it took before you could play it properly.įor example, I've tried playing parts of it with hybrid picking, and I've tried to do all the other stuff like releasing the tension in my fingers (although I really can't do this when it matters most), and trying to play it slowly, but even at half speed he seems to have note diarrhoea. Now, I went ahead and learnt the rest of the song and, surprise surprise, most of it is actually quite easy, but still relatively challenging, and a LOT of fun to play. Perhaps the hardest piece on the page for me personally! It took me a month while I was balancing other projects and I kind of recorded it all in sections. So, like every guitarist ever, I've decided to jump into the infamous "Cliffs of Dover" by Eric Johnson, and straight off the bat, I was shot down. If you are interested in checking that out, the links are in the description :).

I made a few modifications and you can see the settings on my Patreon page. If you are feeling the hybrid, go for it!įor the tone, I used the Cliffs of Eric preset in Amplitube 5. But in other performances, he hybrid picks that. Of course, there are parts from the studio take that he doesn’t play again (but he always improvises something equally amazing) so I listened very closely and took my best educated guess and did what felt comfortable for me personally.įor Bars 23 – 29, I observed from the Austin Texas performance that he picks the whole part.

That was the performance on December 18th 1988. I’m mainly going by Johnson’s hand positioning from the “Eric Johnson Live from Austin Texas” video posted on YouTube.
